Human Geography of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Population

(Above) Created by me, using [9] and [12].

The population and population density of Charlottetown reflect those of the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone;  as the area is small, the density is much higher, though as one looks at the population, which is also low, it becomes evident that it is the reason for the height of the density.

The population of Charlottetown is 64 487, and the density is 80.8 people per square kilometre.

As the diagram to the left shows, life expectancy is high in Charlottetown, and the majority of the population is aged 45-54.

Cultural Make-Up

The people of Charlottetown vary in ethnicity, with the four major groups being Scottish, Canadian, English and Irish.  Those of Scottish descent are the most abundant overall.

The population of Charlottetown identifies as :

-Scottish = 42.2%                     -French = 18.5%                    -Acadian = 1 .9%

Ethnic Celebrations, Holidays, and Festivals

The festivals and such that occur in Charlottetown, PEI are largely influenced by the city's cultural make-up, or more specifically, by some of its larger cultural groups.

As the Scots and the Irish are two of Charlottetown's more sizable ethnic groups, many a Ceilidh (also spelt Ceili) is held.

A Ceilidh is a gaelic social gathering hosted by those of Irish or Scottish descent.  At a Ceilidh, one can expect gaelic folk music, as well as dancing.

Charlottetown also has a fair amount of Germans.  So, the city has just begun organizing Oktoberfest celebrations (the first will occur in September-October 2014).

Oktoberfest is a German fair which includes food, traditional German clothing (Lederhosen for men (left) and Dirndl for women (right)), polka dancing, music, and most of all, beer and sausage!

(Though it will be carried out like a true celebration, Charlottetown's Oktoberfest is occurring in support of the Young at Heart Musical Theatre for
seniors) [33].
